Scavland Mechanics
Explanations of Scavland survival systems — Mist, radiation, abilities, reputation, trading, and shelters — with evidence labels and playtest TBD where needed.
Scavland’s survival pressure comes from overlapping systems: environmental hazards in Zalesye, combat and ammo choice, Jobs and reputation with factions, a purchasable hideout / camps / trading loop, and character abilities. This hub explains how those systems fit together, which child guides to read in what order, and how this wiki labels evidence — without inventing meters, thresholds, or skill-node values that belong in a playtest log.
Site status note (editorial, 2026-10-31): Scavland entered Steam Early Access on September 4, 2026. Public materials discussed on this wiki currently reference builds through Hotfix 0.8.8 (October 19, 2026) after Update 0.8.0 (October 17, 2026). Child pages were refreshed on 2026-10-31 away from pre-release tone; unknowns stay labeled TBD.
How this wiki labels mechanic facts
Every mechanics article should make the evidence layer obvious:
- Confirmed from official notes as of [patch / date] — Steam store text or NoShadow patch notes, linked in the article.
- Wiki playtest log — repeatable in-game checks with version badge, method, and caveats. Until a log exists, we say TBD instead of guessing.
- Editorial reading — our advice on risk order and reading order; never presented as a hidden developer number.
We do not publish fake radiation ticks, Mist timers, reputation breakpoints, or ability coefficients. Empty tables in our playtest table templates are intentional.

| Mutants & encounters | /mechanics/mutants-creatures-and-encounters/ | Confirmed mutants/creatures existence; HP ammo guidance pointer | Bestiary stats |
| Hideout, camps, trading | /mechanics/shelters-camps-and-trading/ | Confirmed systems framing + trading hooks used by other guides | Exact vendor rank tables |
| Ammo & armor (combat rules) | /weapons/ammo-types-and-armor-penetration/ | Patch-note-backed penetration rules after 0.8.0 | Your own DPS sheets if you add them later |
| Jobs & reputation | /guides/quests-and-reputation/ | Confirmed systems overview | Threshold tables, job reward matrices |
| Game modes | /guides/game-modes-explorer-returner-iron-man/ | Mode differences from notes | Personal difficulty recommendations after hours played |
Combat weapon hubs live under /weapons/; map hazard context under /maps/. Mechanics pages explain rules and loops; map pages explain where; weapon pages explain loadout choice.
Suggested reading order (new players)
Follow this order if you are learning systems, not chasing a speedrun:
- Game modes — death, stash, and stamina rules change how expensive a mistake is. Pick Explorer / Returner / Iron Man with eyes open.
- Beginner guide — loop mindset: explore a manageable area, return to safety, convert loot into progression.
- Radiation and the Mist — learn what is setting versus what is still unverified UI. Do not copy radiation rules from other games.
- Ammo types and armor penetration — after 0.8.0, magazine choice matters as much as the gun name; this is one of the densest confirmed-rule pages on the wiki.
- Hideout, camps, and trading — understand where crafting and vendors sit in the loop before you over-invest in a single weapon fantasy.
- Quests and reputation — Jobs and factions gate long-term access; keep thresholds in a playtest table until measured.
- Abilities and skill tree — build theory last; official confirmation is thinner than community wishlists.
Survival systems as a loop (editorial model)
Think in a closed loop rather than a checklist of isolated meters:
Depart → pressure → decision → return → convert.
- Depart: leave a known safe reference (hideout, camp, or last clear landmark).
- Pressure: mutants, hostile survivors, scarcity (ammo jams and limited rounds are part of the advertised fantasy), and environmental danger zones such as irradiated swamps.
- Decision: fight, avoid, or disengage; swap ammo type; abandon weight; mark a retreat path.
- Return: surviving the walk back matters more than one lucky chest.
- Convert: turn loot into repairs, attachments, trader purchases, Job progress, or reputation — then depart again with a slightly better kit.
This model stays valid even when individual numbers change in a hotfixes. When a patch reworks a subsystem (as 0.8.0 did for armor penetration), update the child guide first, then adjust one sentence on this hub pointing to the new “as of” date.
Environmental pressure: radiation and the Mist
Confirmed from official store framing (as cited on the child page): irradiated swamps exist as a location type in the Zalesye setting. That establishes radiation as part of the world fiction.
Not confirmed on the store text reviewed for the child guide: a named player radiation meter, exposure curve, damage table, protection items, or treatment consumables — and whether a system called “the Mist” appears with its own rules.
How to use the child page until the playtest log exists:
- Treat “irradiated” labels as a reason to plan a retreat path before you enter.
- Watch the live HUD for any exposure, protection, or condition indicators on your first controlled visit.
- Log: game version, location name/type, visible warnings, time-to-effect, recovery behavior.
- Refuse genre assumptions (“it works like Stalker / Fallout”) in published tables.
Deep page: Radiation and the Mist.
Progression pressure: abilities, Jobs, reputation
Official marketing for Scavland emphasizes quests, reputation, and multiple factions (FAQ/store framing used across the wiki: on the order of 10 factions). Abilities / skill-tree copy on the Steam page is thinner than weapon and attachment counts, which is why the abilities child guide is written as a status article: it states what is and is not confirmed, instead of publishing a fake tree.
Editorial rules for progression pages:
- Name the faction or Job giver only when the source or playtest log supports it.
- Put reputation ranks and unlock thresholds in a versioned table — empty cells beat invented numbers for AdSense and for players.
- When patch notes change rewards or vendor stock (examples already appear in the ammo economy section of the 0.8.0 write-up), cite the patch and update the trading / reputation guides together.
Deep pages: Abilities and skill tree, Quests and reputation, Shelters, camps, and trading.
Economy and shelter: why trading is a mechanic, not a side page
Gathering, crafting, trading, and a purchasable hideout are part of the confirmed activity set described across beginner and shelter guides. Vendors and ranks also appear in patch-note-driven economy changes (for example, trader stock notes referenced from the ammo guide after 0.8.0).
Use the shelter/trading guide to answer:
- Where do you convert scrap into permanence?
- Which progress is character-bound vs world/faction-bound (once verified)?
- How do ammo price spikes change loadout discipline?
Keep camp-specific rules in the playtest log until observed. Do not merge unverified camp buffs into the hub as fact.
Combat rules that belong in your mechanics mental model
Even though weapon pages live under /weapons/, armor penetration is a rules change that affects every scav run after Update 0.8.0:
- Penetration subtracts from armor instead of only scaling it (per official notes summarized on the ammo guide).
- AP / HP / FMJ roles differ against armored humans vs unarmored mutants.
- Your own armor follows the same rules; enemies can bring AP too.
Read Ammo types and armor penetration before you invent a “best gun” list. Magazines that remember ammo type (Hotfix 0.8.8 note on that guide) change how you prepare mixed patrols.
Deep-page plan (publish roadmap)
| Priority | Page | Goal |
|---|---|---|
| P0 | This hub | ≥800 words of methodology + reading order (this draft) |
| P0 | Radiation & Mist | Rewrite pre-release tone; add playtest log skeleton; keep unknowns explicit |
| P1 | Abilities | Same rewrite pattern; no fake nodes |
| P1 | Shelters / trading | Merge post-0.8.0 trader notes; version badges |
| P2 | New: “Status effects & recovery” | Only after UI observed |
| P2 | Cross-link from FAQ | Point “where does info come from?” to methodology page |
