FAQ

Does Scavland support controllers and Steam Deck?
Yes. Pre-launch wishlist notes and the Steam store advertise full controller support with Steam Deck and handheld play in mind. Verify the current Deck Verified badge on the live Steam page.
Can you rebind keys and buttons?
Yes. Update 0.6.0 rebuilt the Controls Settings page so many actions are rebindable, including combinations with Hold and Tap variants, and alternate bindings are displayed.
What is the Action Hint Bar?
A dynamic on-screen control hint for Inventory, Trade, Journal, Map, and stack splitting. It can be disabled in Gameplay Settings per Update 0.6.0 notes.

Controller and Steam Deck status

Official materials from the August 25, 2026 wishlist milestone post state that Scavland has full controller support and was designed with Steam Deck and handheld play in mind. The Steam store listing also references Steam Deck compatibility with full controller support — always re-check the live store badge, because verification status can change independently of patch notes.

Early Access launched September 4, 2026. Input work continued after launch, especially in Update 0.6.0 (September 9, 2026).

What Update 0.6.0 rebuilt

The Controls Settings page was completely rebuilt. Bindings are separated into:

  • Movement
  • Combat
  • Inventory
  • Crafting
  • Trader
  • Map
  • Journal
  • General

Confirmed capabilities from the notes:

  • Rebind keys and controller buttons for many more actions.
  • Key/button combinations, including Hold and Tap variations.
  • Alternate bindings are displayed.
  • More actions are configurable, including Loot/Transfer, Sort, Drop, Rotate, Item Actions, Craft, Buy/Sell, Map Zoom/Expand, Switch Guns, Track Job, and Cancel Job.
  • A new Action Hint Bar dynamically shows relevant controls in Inventory, Trade, Journal, Map, and stack splitting.
  • The Action Hint Bar can be disabled in Gameplay Settings.
  • Quick actions in the UI use configurable action binds instead of fixed buttons.
  • On gamepad, Map and Journal use separate buttons by default.
  • Switch Guns is rebindable and defaults to L3 on gamepad.
  • Gamepad movement returned to 8-directional movement (diagonals allowed again).

Death screen and Jobs on gamepad

Update 0.7.0 rebuilt the Death Screen with proper actions (not any-key) and added full gamepad support to that screen:

  • Returner: Continue / Load Game
  • Iron Man: New Game / Exit
  • Tutorial: Try Again

Hotfix 0.6.2 fixed cancel-job confirm on gamepad so D-pad left/right actually moves between No and Yes.

Hotfix 0.8.8 fixed a controller conflict: Take All (Left Stick) no longer switches your gun — important when looting containers after 0.8.0’s new loot system.

Steam Deck practical notes (editorial)

This wiki does not invent performance presets or verified FPS numbers. For Deck sessions:

  1. Confirm the current Steam Deck compatibility category on the store page.
  2. Prefer the rebuilt Controls page over third-party overlays until you know which binds conflict.
  3. Keep the Action Hint Bar on for the first hours of Inventory and Trade learning, then disable it if HUD space is tight.
  4. Pair handheld sessions with sleep and time skip so long rests are intentional, not accidental menu exits.
Where sleep meets controller UI

Update 0.6.0 added a Sleep interface designed for mouse/keyboard and controller. Hotfix 0.6.3 fixed an NPC interaction blocked by bed sleep prompts. If a prompt steals focus near a bed, step away and reopen the interaction.
